How Fashion Affects Our Lives

There are times when I think of what life would be like if it was easy and everyone had freedom. Would it be lonely? Would it be boring? Would we all get along? The idea that someone with no social skills could just wear whatever they wanted and have everything be okay, seemed to me just a lot simpler than I thought it would be. However, it turns out it’s not so simple and not as perfect as you might think!

There were a few things I found myself doing in the past which led me towards wanting to write this post. From my relationship with money, to being at home without having to work all day for my job, to even just getting a job which means I can go out and buy clothes, all have an impact on our day-to-day experience. It has been proven though through studies that our shopping habits affect everything from our mood to the way we perceive ourselves.

We live in a world where there is always something to do to keep us entertained, however, there are some people who spend their whole life looking for new things to add to their wardrobes rather than enjoying their own. These people take pleasure in simply wearing more clothes and doing nothing but adding a new little touch to things, even if it makes them look better, they still find enjoyment in it and always bring back memories of the look or maybe a piece of clothing.

The thing about this is, it can be very difficult to resist buying more stuff. We know how easily we can purchase whatever we want, that’s why our brains are constantly telling our brain that it’s worth it, however, with more stuff comes greater responsibility, as well as, many emotions which can affect our self-worth like insecurity and even depression.

So to avoid feeling the need to buy more, try making a conscious effort to limit yourself by only having one or two major items when it comes to buying clothes and only choosing your essentials. It will help ensure that you don’t end up spending a load of money on unnecessary items but also make sure that you enjoy the look of it rather than worrying about how much it costs. This seems easier said than done. Try making a conscious choice of what you want to do with your purchases and make every decision on your own.

A common one of mine is to choose a dress. A couple of years ago, I went to a store and bought a dress that was meant to be pretty floral but ended up being more like a corseted outfit because it was so loose and slinky and had lots of holes. My first time wearing it, I felt awkward and embarrassed, but, after weeks of it going wrong and being made fun of by friends and family, I realized I was happy despite my dressing troubles. So now I have to decide whether it’s worth continuing or trying again.

Like most people these days, I love dresses, even though I have never once in the habit of wearing them regularly before. For this reason, I feel like if I’m going to be honest, not buying anything else is gonna be my priority. Even though I’ve had my fair share of issues from not wearing enough or any of the right amount of clothing, I tend to prefer it to other types of things so it’d be nice if I just found the time and space to wear them. But until then, I’ll just need to be aware of how it feels and work out if what I want to wear makes sense.

It may seem silly of me to talk about clothes but they have done so much for my mental and physical health. Whether it’s just a casual night out or the whole weekend, how I feel is a very important and personal aspect of how I feel. You can’t just tell someone what to do, it’s about a balance between making sure that you’re comfortable, and just doing what you want to. Even just being able to choose what you will be wearing (or not wearing) is extremely important.

Don’t spend hours thinking of what you’ll wear and start buying them on Saturday or Monday once the next week gets over. If your partner doesn’t like it, find a dress that isn’t too fussy and a bit more conservative. Having a few extra pieces does not mean you have to spend loads of cash or do anything crazy. Just make sure you have a good head on your shoulders and don’t let those feelings get to you. Remember you are the boss in this situation so start giving yourself permission and respect.
